Environmental Impact:

Disposable 100% Cotton Linen Versus Rotable Linen

Royal Air Maroc Duvet

During the WTCE show in Hamburg, one of our ‘hottest’ product was the disposable 100% cotton linen products (napkins, coasters and tray mats). They are made of a very stylish material and their visual impact is amazing. Passengers and lounge guests are delighted when offered this product.

We shall not forget that the disposable linen material is 33% lighter than the rotable linen and apart from their visual impact and lighter weight, there is also a very important environmental impact that we would like to share with you.

These are the results we found for the washing, drying, ironing and transport to/from the laundry facilities, considering each product can be washed up to 20 washes. We could help the environment by not using:

washing liquids
litres of water
kilowatt electricity
litres of fuel

Note: Reduction in kerosene used during the flight was not calculated.
        Gas emissions were not calculated.

These are some of the benefits that we grouped under three categories:

Weight:

   >33% lighter than rotable cotton products of similar sizes;

   >Reduction in kerosene consumption of airplanes; and

   >Reduction in: CO2, HC, NO and CO emissions.

Land Logistics (Transport to/from laundry facilities):

   >High reduction in the number of land vehicles used;

   >Time savings by catering units;

   >Reduction in fuel used for transportation;

   >Reduction in: CO2, HC, NO and CO emissions; and

   >Reduction in product losses.

Washing, Drying & Ironing Cycles:

   >No consumption of water;

   >No consumption of detergents, bleaches and other industrial washing liquids;

   >No liquid waste poured into sewers, rivers, oceans in the washing process;

   >No quality incidents during the washing cycles, ironing, handling and internal logistics; and

   >Significant reduction of electricity consumption; and

   >Reduction on: CO2, HC, NO and CO emissions.

To quantify the environmental impact of not washing, drying and ironing these three products used in the cabin service, we made some assumptions. To read all assumptions, click here.
